What you might need handy

Sometimes, we have to do extra checks to verify your identity. We won’t always need this, but having the following information and documents ready may help speed up the application process if we do:

Photographic Identification

We accept:

  • A valid passport
  • A valid photocard driving licence
  • A national identity card
  • A firearms certificate or shotgun licence
  • An identity card issued by the Electoral Office of Northern Ireland

If you don’t have any of the above forms of ID, please contact us at: [email protected]

Bank Statement

A recent UK bank statement for the current account you’ll use as your nominated account. This must be a current account and not a savings account.

Selfie

In some cases, we may ask you to take a selfie to verify your identity against your photo ID.

Why do we ask for proof of ID and address?

We work hard to keep your money safe and prevent financial crime. One of the ways we can do this is to check and validate the identification of our customers when you open a bank account online.

We usually verify electronically but sometimes this isn’t possible. For example, if you haven’t lived at your current address long enough or have recently moved. We have a responsibility to verify your identity when you are opening a savings account.

More on applying for a savings account

Read our FAQs on applying for an account, or visit our help and support pages for more information.

If we’re unable to verify your identity electronically, we may ask you to take and upload a photo of yourself using your mobile phone.

We’ll use this alongside any identification documents we’ve asked for to help confirm your identity.

To open a savings account with us, you’ll need to give us the details of a personal UK bank or building society current account in your name. This will become your nominated bank account. It allows you to pay money into your Hodge savings account.

We’ll check that the account is a current account in your name. If you enter a savings account instead, we won’t be able to accept it and you’ll need to start the application again.

You can only have one nominated bank account linked to each Hodge savings account.

No, please don’t email us your documents unless we’ve specifically asked you to. Instead, upload them using the secure link we’ve provided.

No, we won’t send your account number and sort code by email. You can find them by logging in to online banking and selecting your account.

First, complete the application using the account holder’s details. If we ask you to provide ID and you’re unable to do so, please email [email protected] and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

Once you’ve started an application, you can’t change the product you’re applying for. You also can’t switch between monthly and annual interest options.

If you haven’t completed the application yet, you’ll need to leave it and start again. If you’ve already submitted it, you have 14 days to change your mind and submit a new application.

No, you can only apply for and open an account online.

You can upload your documents using the secure link we send by email. Just follow the link and upload the documents we’ve asked for.

Please note that the link is time-sensitive and will expire after a set period.

If you can’t find the email or your link has expired, please email [email protected] and we’ll send you a new one.

We don’t accept deposits by cheque or banker’s draft. Please add money to your account by electronic Bank Transfer.

If you’re paying in less than £100,000, you can make a faster payment through your nominated bank account using your Hodge savings account number and sort code. You can find this by logging in to your online account.

If you’re paying in more than £100,000, you can make a CHAPS payment into our account (sort code 30-91-63 and account number 00209271), using your name and savings account number as your reference. Your bank might charge you for making a CHAPS payment.

If we’ve asked you for documents, please upload a scanned image to the ‘Document Management’ section of your secure online banking portal. We may also request documents by email.

As long as it’s clear and complete, we should be able to accept it. We’ll get in touch if not.

We’ll carry out electronic searches to verify you as part of your application, so you shouldn’t need to send us any ID. Sometimes, we have to do extra checks to verify your identity.  If we do need any more information from you, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.

It’s quick and easy to apply for an account online – and takes about 10 minutes.
