Just because summer is behind us and we’re entering the spookiest time of the year, it doesn’t mean that saving money gets any easier. Some may argue it’s actually harder to save money in the Autumn months.

With Bonfire Night and Halloween on the horizon and many families looking to take part in the festivities, we thought we’d put together some hints and tips to help you enjoy the events without blowing the budget in the process.

So, what have we done to gather spook-tacular tips and tricks?

People shared some of the ways they’re seeing their money go up in smoke:

We surveyed more than 1,000 customers, asking them a few questions about how they plan to spend Halloween and Bonfire Night with their family and friends.

47%

of people would spend their money on food for bonfire night

51%

of people would spend between £11 and £40 on bonfire night

67.7%

of the people we surveyed said they would look to find a free, local event

4.6%

said they spend money on a party for bonfire night

But, what are the results actually showing us? That more than three quarters of people are finding free, local events to save money and still have a fun experience with the family.

With over half of responses saying they people would spend between £11-40 on Bonfire night, there are bonfire night events near you which are affordable. You can find events local to you here, can even customise for price and location.

Onto a pretty surprising finding now. Only 4.6% of people said they would spend money on a party but, with a large number of organised displays available to attend, it makes sense to go out and soak up the atmosphere.

Of course it’s great to get involved, so here’s how you can get more bang for your buck this Bonfire Night

  • Set a budget as you approach the planning stage
  • Homemade cooking before going out to local firework events
  • Split the cost of fireworks with family and friends for a stay-at-home firework display
  • Buy your own sparklers and re-use previous year’s decorations and novelties
  • Find a free, local firework display or watch the display from a distance at a good vantage point

Knowing what we do about Bonfire Night savings, let’s find out how to have a spooktacular Halloween on a budget.

You won’t regret it…

So, let’s dive in…

How much are people spending on average for Halloween?

Of the 1,000 customers we sent our survey to, the findings were very different to bonfire night.

25.6%

Less than £10

35.9%

£11-30

25.6%

£31-40

11%

£41-50

Even though the spending amounts look eerily similar, what that money is spent on is frighteningly one-sided.

Nearly 85% of responses said they would spend money on sweets for trick or treating, with nearly 60% of people spending their money on decorations and more than 25% of people spending money on costumes for themselves or their children.

At last, some wicked wisdom from Hodge customers when it comes to saving money this Halloween.

Halloween budget recommendations and tips straight from our customers:

Attend free, local Halloween events. Find some near you -
  • Buy sweets in bulk and/or on sale when possible
  • Re-use old costumes from previous years
  • Buy second hand costumes at a lower price
  • Shop at stores with lower price points for sweets (Poundland, B&M etc)
  • Make a costume from the clothes you already have at home
  • Buy one additional Halloween decoration each year and add to your collection for reusing every year.
